# [Smart Math] Percentages Problem 16

Here’s and example of a SMART MATH problem for PERCENTAGES.

### Problem

3% of rice stored in a godown is pilfered and 5% of the rest goes bad. If 11058 quintals of the rice remains in good condition, what was the original amount stored?

1. 11500 quintals
2. 11800 quintals
3. 12000 quintals
4. 12500 quintals
5. 1300 quintals

### The Usual Method

Let the original quantity of rice stored in the godown = x quintals.

Hence, rice in good condition = $0.97\times 0.95\times x=11058$

$\therefore x=\frac{11058}{0.97\times 0.95}=12000$quintals.

(Ans: 3)

Estimated Time to arrive at the answer = 45 seconds.

### Using Technique

Simply add 3% and 5%, we get 8%(-)

Approximately 8% of the rice is reduced from the original quantity. Note that the (-) sign indicates that the actual value will be slightly less than 8%.

8% of 11058 or 11000 (rounded) = 880. Add this to 11058, we get:

11058 + 880 = 11938. Thus the actual answer should be close to 11938. The only option satisfying this condition is option ‘3’.

(Ans: 3)

Estimated Time to arrive at the answer = 15 seconds.
