Here’s and example of a SMART MATH problem for PERCENTAGES.

Problem

Every month M saves 1.67% of his salary of $6000. In how many months will M save $6000?

  1. 60 months
  2. 6 months
  3. 52 months
  4. 48 months
  5. 12 months

The Usual Method

In a month M saves 1.67% of $6000. i.e. \frac{1.67}{100}\times 6000 = $100.

Hence to save $6000, M will have to save for 60 months.

(Ans: 1)

Estimated Time to arrive at the answer = 45 seconds.

Using Technique

Note that 1.67% = \frac{10}{6}( \frac{1}{6}=0.1667, \therefore \frac{10}{6}=1.667). Thus to save $6000, i.e 100% of the salary, M will have to save for 60 months ( \because \frac{10}{6}=1.667, he saves 10% of the salary in 6 months, so for 100%, he will take 60 months).

(Ans: 1)
