Here’s and example of a SMART MATH problem for RATIO PROPORTION.

Ratio Proportion

Problem

In a basket of fruits, the ratio of the number of mangoes to apples was 4 : 3. Ten apples are added to the basket to make the number of mangoes equal to that of apples. How many mangoes were originally there in the basket?

  3. 35
  4. 40
  5. 50

The Usual Method

Total number of mangoes originally in the basket = 4x.

Total number of apples originally in the basket = 3x.

Total number of apples after adding 10 apples = 3x + 10

\therefore 3x+10=4x

\therefore 4x-3x=10

\therefore x=10

Hence, total number of mangoes originally present = 4x = 4 x 10 = 40.

(Ans: 4)

Estimated Time to arrive at the answer = 30 seconds.

Using Technique

Note that ratio of mangoes to apples is 4 : 3 and that the number of mangoes remains unchanged. Hence, number of mangoes = multiple of 4. Hence option ‘4’.

—Alternatively—

Assuming 4 mangoes and 3 apples, the difference between them is 1. Hence for the difference between them is 1. Hence for the difference to be 10, there should be 40 mangoes and 30 apples. Hence option ‘4’.
