Here’s an example of a SPEED MATH shortcut for MULTIPLYING NUMBERS NEAR 1000 : (Mul) Nr1000 from the MULTIPLICATION category.
When can I use this method?
For multiplying numbers near 1000. The numbers can be either more than 1000 or less than 1000 or a combination of the two.
You may also use this method to multiply numbers a little farther away from 1000 as long as their differences from 1000 are easy to multiply.

Notes –
- This method uses the concept (1000 + a) (1000 + b) = [(1000 + a) + b] + ab or [(1000 + b) + a] + ab, where ‘(1000 + a)’ and ‘(1000 + b)’ are numbers near 1000 and ‘a’ and ‘b’ are the respective differences.
- Whenever the number is more than 1000, the difference is written as positive (+ve).
- Whenever the number is less than 1000, the difference is written as negative (-ve).
- When both numbers are either less or more than 1000, you add the product of differences.
- When one number is more than 1000 and another less than 1000, you subtract the product of differences.
